Leary Athletic Complex Redevelopment

TERRA Environmental managed and performed MCP response actions at a disposal site associated with redevelopment of the Waltham Public Schools Leary Fields Athletic Complex. Site characterization identified contamination impacts associated with historic filling operations including coal and coal ash materials throughout the property. Based on comprehensive site characterization results and future intended use as an athletic facility, soil excavation and disposal operations were conducted under a Release Abatement Measure (RAM) Plan consisting of removal of over 27,000 tons of contaminated soil, installation of Risk Reduction Barrier and Cap system, and implementation of Activity and Use Limitation for site closure and development. The AUL was established to restrict direct exposure pathways to residually impacted soil beneath the Risk Reduction Barrier while allowing continued use of the athletic field complex for educational and recreational purposes.
