Residential Oil Release – Boston MA
TERRA Environmental was retained by a residential homeowner to investigate and remediate a heating oil release at a private residence. In 2023, initial investigation identified an approximately ¼ inch diameter hole in the heating oil fill pipe, located beneath the exterior front staircase in a soil-filled area separated from the basement by a cinderblock wall. The intact Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) in the basement was not leaking, with oil release occurring only through the damaged fill pipe during regular tank refilling over an unidentified time period.
TERRA completed comprehensive remediation including soil excavation and groundwater recovery to remove petroleum-impacted media, followed by extensive post-remediation monitoring. Environmental assessment included three quarters of groundwater sampling, soil vapor monitoring, and indoor air quality assessment to evaluate potential vapor intrusion pathways. Results demonstrated achievement of No Significant Risk levels under current and foreseeable use conditions, providing regulatory closure for the residential property.
Residential heating oil release investigation and remediation with homeowner coordination: Comprehensive site assessment identifying fill pipe damage and petroleum impact characterization beneath exterior staircase area
Soil excavation and groundwater recovery with petroleum-impacted media removal: Complete remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater including excavation coordination and impacted media disposal
Post-remediation monitoring with soil vapor and indoor air quality assessment: Three quarters of groundwater sampling and comprehensive vapor intrusion evaluation to assess potential indoor air impacts
No Significant Risk achievement with regulatory closure documentation: Demonstration of compliance with applicable standards and values confirming protection of human health under current and foreseeable use conditions
